Five Countries in Two Days

We started the morning with a delicious Swiss breakfast at the hotel. Then it was off to Austria via the minuscule country of Liechtenstein. Once in Innsbruck, home of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics, students attended baking class at the Austrian Tourism School. Besides learning about the importance of tourism in a unified European economic system, students perfected their culinary skills by preparing the traditional Austrian/German dish, Apfelstrudel!!  The Food Network will be calling!

After lunch we crossed the border into Germany to meet our excited host families. Since we arrived 45 minutes early, not all the German teens were there. So word got out and the meeting area quickly filled up with smiling kids and parents.  I talked to a few of the German kids who were standing nearby. They were upset, because in their words, "We didn't get an American student. There weren't enough to go around." Isn't it nice to be so wanted?!

We will meet the delegates tomorrow at school -- they will attend morning classes with their host brother or sister and then spend the next two afternoons and evenings with their families. We have lots of photos of happy, excited students who are fulfilling President Eisenhower's dream of "Peace Through Understanding."  I will upload Karla's photos in the next post.
